Day 18: Shinjuku Metropolitan Government Building

One last time I took the chance to look over the sea of houses in Tokyo. This time I went to the observation deck of the Shinjuku Metropolitan Government Building, the administrative headquarters of Tokyo Metropolis.

Shopping in Ginza

Tokyo Plaza Ginza

Before the trip to Shinjuku, I spent some time in Ginza. The goal was to buy a few things you can only get in Japan – dashi powder for Keiko, nigiri molds, and maybe even a yukata in one of the second-hand shops. In the end, I just browsed around in a variety of shops. I actually had everything I wanted to buy by now, and my suitcases were already pretty full.

So I just went with the flow, visited the huge supermarket in Tokyu Plaza and also paid Uniqlo another visit. Unfortunately, I still didn’t fit into the nice clothes.

I then had a quick lunch (ramen) at Tokyu Plaza, which was excellent as always. Unfortunately, the restaurant on the sixth floor was closed. Then I continued on to Shinjuku.

The Shinjuku Metropolitan Government Building has two observation decks on each of the towers, each about 250 m high, and both are free to access. However, you do have to factor in some waiting time. As it was already late, the south tower was the only option for me. While I was waiting, I took a look at the Sakura forecast map – well, it was still very optimistic about the cherry blossoms. As temperatures around zero were forecast for the next few days, I wasn’t expecting a sudden display of blossoms.

When we arrived at the platform, it was just beginning to get dark, the first lights were flashing and it was quite hazy. An interesting atmosphere, and since it cleared up again later, there was a lot to see – this time from a different perspective.

I also bought a few small things for friends and acquaintances in the souvenir shop. While I waited for nightfall, I had a leisurely beer. I then got the longed-for night view and the whole trip was absolutely worth it. If you can’t make it to the Skytree or don’t want to spend the money, the City Hall is definitely an insider tip! But you should also plan enough time here.
